Cal Upsets Arizona 77-69: Golden Bears Beat No. 7 Wildcats For Big Road Win

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Cal coach Mike Montgomery has been reluctant to use a zone defense much this season because, frankly, his team hasn't been very good at it.

After the Bears had some success with the zone late against Arizona State, he decided to give it a go to open the second half against No. 7 Arizona.

It couldn't have worked out any better, sending another top-10 team to a loss.

Sparked by its zone, Cal went on a big run to open the second half and held on behind the shooting of Allen Crabbe and Justin Cobbs for a 77-69 victory Sunday night over the Wildcats, the sixth top-10 team to lose this week.

"We had a rhythm and communication," Montgomery said. "They had some penetration, but it took them out of their norm. We haven't been very good at it this season and it was a matter of game and circumstance."

Cal (14-9, 6-5 Pac-12) rallied from a 15-point deficit behind its defense against Arizona State on Thursday before coming up just short in a 66-62 loss.

The Bears went to their zone earlier against Arizona, keying a 17-2 run that put them up 10 early in the second half.

Even as the Wildcats started to figure out the zone, Cal didn't flinch, making some big shots down the stretch to beat Arizona at the McKale Center for the third straight season.

Crabbe scored on a tough shot along the baseline with just over 2 minutes left and had 19 of his 31 points in the second half.

Cobbs hit a keep-em-at-bay 3-pointer just before that and scored on a layup with 39 seconds left, finishing with 21 points.

Cobbs also hit two free throws to build Cal's cushion in the closing seconds, allowing Crabbe to walk to the free throw line with a huge smile on his face for a shot that he missed but didn't matter.

"I really can't think of any other moment in college where I felt this great," Crabbe said.

The Wildcats are feeling awful after becoming the latest top-10 team to go down.

Arizona (20-3, 8-3) never fully recovered after struggling against Cal's zone defense to open in the second half and had a rare letdown on defense, allowing Cal to shoot 59 percent.

Mark Lyons had 16 points, Solomon Hill added 13 and Brandon Ashley 12 for Arizona, which ended a five-game winning streak.

The Wildcats join Indiana, Florida, Michigan, Kansas (twice) and Ohio State as top-10 teams to take a tumble this week.

"We let the zone affect us and didn't get the ball movement we needed," Hill said. "When you don't get things rolling on the offensive end, it takes you mentally away from the game."

Arizona has had a penchant for getting off to slow starts this season, particularly at home, of all places.

The Wildcats did it against Florida in a matchup of top-10 teams in December before rallying for a victory and did the same thing against Stanford on Wednesday to nearly spoil the 40th anniversary of the McKale Center opening doors.

Arizona wasn't so fortunate against UCLA on Jan. 24, unable to bounce back after missing 12 of its first 13 shots and falling behind 19-3.

The Wildcats weren't as bad as they were against UCLA, but weren't particularly sharp, either.

Arizona struggled with its shooting early and had some breakdowns defensively, allowing Cal to make 15 of 28 shots and Crabbe to score 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

The Wildcats still managed to lead 38-33 at halftime, thanks to Hill's 11 points and 10-of-13 shooting from the free throw line.

The Bears helped Arizona out with eight mostly-careless turnovers ? two by David Kravish sailed directly into the crowd ? that led to 12 points for Arizona.

Once the second half started, Cal tried to run away with it.

The Bears gave Arizona State problems by switching defenses with 8 minutes left in Thursday's game. Cal got its defensive mojo going earlier against Arizona by switching to a zone to start the second half.

Indecisive and tentative, the Wildcats opened the half by missing nine of their first 10 shots against the Bears' zone, many of those late in the shot clock and contested.

At the other end, the Bears made their first five shots to open with a 17-2 run, going up 50-40 on Crabbe's four-point play.

"We took ill-advised shots," Arizona coach Sean Miller said. "It looked as if we had no idea what we were during for that brief three-minute period."

The Wildcats clawed their way back with a 9-2 run to stay within reach, but never made it all the way back.

Arizona pulled within two on a 3-pointer by Lyons with 2:02 left, but Crabbe answered with a tough baseline drive and Cobbs followed with his layup that made it 75-69, sending the Bears to their biggest road win of the season.

10 killed in stampede during India's holy Hindu festival, Kumbh Mela

At least ten people were killed in a stampede at an Indian train station in a town where million were gathering for Kumbh Mela, a holy Hindu bathing festival. 30 million devotees are expected to bath during the festival.

Hindu devotees take a holy dip at 'Sangam', the confluence of Hindu holy rivers Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati, during the Maha Kumbh festival at Allahabad, India, Sunday. 10 were killed in a stampede at a train station near the festival.

At least 10 people were killed and a dozen more injured Sunday after a stampede broke out at a train station in the northern Indian town where millions of devout Hindus gathered for a religious festival, a senior government minister said.

Pawan Bansal, India's Railway Minister, told reporters that the stampede took place as massive crowds flooded the Allahabad train station on Sunday evening.

At least two television channels, NDTV and CNN-IBN said as many as 20 people were feared dead and 30 others injured. News reports said the large crowds caused a section of a footbridge at the station to collapse leading to the accident.

News reports said tens of thousands of people were at the train station at the time. Television showed large crowds pushing and jostling at the train station as policemen struggled to restore order.

"There was complete chaos. There was no doctor or ambulance for at least two hours after the accident," an eyewitness told NDTV news channel.

An estimated 30 million devotees were expected to take a dip at the Sangam, the confluence of three rivers ? the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati ? on Sunday, one of the holiest bathing days of the?Kumbh?Mela, or Pitcher Festival. The festival lasts 55 days and is one of the world's largest religious gatherings.

The auspicious bathing days are decided by the alignment of stars, and devout Hindus believe a dip in the sacred river on one of these days will wash away their sins and free them from the cycle of death and rebirth.

The festival brings together millions of devout worshipers and thousands of religious leaders and ascetics.

The most dramatic feature of the festival is the Naga sadhus ? ascetics with ash rubbed all over their bodies, wearing only marigold garlands ? leaping joyfully into the holy waters.

According to Hindu mythology, the?Kumbh?Mela?celebrates the victory of gods over demons in a furious battle over nectar that would give them immortality. As one of the gods fled with a pitcher of the nectar across the skies, it spilled on four Indian towns_Allahabad, Nasik, Ujjain and Haridwar.

The?Kumbh?Mela?is held four times every 12 years in those towns. Hindus believe that sins accumulated in past and current lives require them to continue the cycle of death and rebirth until they are cleansed. If they bathe at the Ganges on the most auspicious day of the festival, believers say they can rid themselves of their sins.

Brooks Palmer: How to Let Go of Photo Clutter

I have spent the past 12 years helping clients let go of unnecessary items in their homes, offices and lives -- one area at a time. This post focuses on cutting back on photo clutter.

Photos become clutter when they sit unlooked at in piles, bags, boxes or on the hard-drive on your computer.

1) The first thing you want to find out is if you like looking at the photos you take. This means past the time you first get them from the one-hour photo lab, or when you check out a photo you just took with your camera phone. Ask yourself, "Do I enjoy regularly looking at my photos?"

If you do enjoy looking at your pictures, great! But if not, it's worth noticing that the photos aren't serving you. I've worked with a lot of clients who saved bags or boxes of random photos, but never looked at them. They were hanging on to the pictures because they felt like it would be wrong to throw them out. I get it, we tend to take pictures at special moments. We end up making that photo sacred in our minds. But if it's not your nature to look at pictures, then hanging on to them will hurt you.

2) Printed photos. What if you like to look at your pictures but have large piles of them and are too overwhelmed to figure out what to do? Sit down with a stack of pictures, pick up the first photo and ask, "Do I like this picture or not?" You want to see which pictures mean something to you now. This is easier than it seems. You'll come across blurry pics, ones where you don't care for the person who's in the picture, seven photos of the same group standing in the same pose, ones where you don't like how you look, one where you can't remember who the person is, and one's you just don't like. Toss these pictures.

When you're done, either put the photos you like in an existing photo album that you like looking through, or go to the store and get a photo book that makes you happy. If you're starting from scratch, think of it as producing a one-of-a-kind book that is made just for you. Be creative!

3) Digital pictures. The thing about camera phones is that since we don't have to worry about film, we can take an unlimited amount of pictures. Often times what happens is these photos get downloaded onto the hard drive on our computer. In the long run, we end up with hundreds and sometimes thousands of photos on our hard-drive. I remember a client who scrolled down over hundreds of jpegs, not having a clue what each picture was about.

We don't do well with too many choices. We tend to shut down. What helps is to quickly go through each photo, one at a time, on your hard-drive and ask, "Do I want to use this in some way (Facebook, website, send to others, print it up on a calender or put in a picture frame) or can I delete it?" Remember, saving things and not using them creates stagnation. You're looking for a way to make a thing into an experience for you.

4) When to take a picture. The other night I heard a comedian talk about how parents compulsively take pictures when their kids perform at a school event. He said they don't even see their kid in that moment. They block out their kid with the camera so they can get the picture.

There's a powerful connection in a moment that occurs between you and what you are experiencing. It feels amazing. I know from experience that taking out my camera phone and trying to save the moment by taking a photo takes me out of the moment. I prefer enjoying the moment, knowing in a second it will be gone. It makes it more precious.

I'm not suggesting that you avoid taking pictures, but maybe let some moments be just between you and what you are experiencing.

Please write and tell me your experiences clutter busting your photos; it helps inspire people when you share.

Emergency: If you build it, do they really come? | Love, Life, and ...

Last night, my car did some weird thing and stopped in the middle of the highway. We were in 30 degree weather. The police called a tow truck before I could work anything out. They were there within a half hour. My car is gone. The car that I slept in when I was homeless. I am not materialistic, more sentimental than anything. My car is a necessity ? and a liability, not a want and an asset (financially speaking). I?m blown, not without faith but definitely feeling like I am unable to be the solution to my own problem. $240 tow and a $65 a day problem.

Many of you do not know that I offer pastoral counseling. I do not feel that this is appropriate to ?market? but people find me from all over the country as God leads. Much of my work is service that I do not get paid for because it is ministry. I?m always busy working, and serving.

Producing a book, developing healing and prevention programs, having an event these are all income generators that support my ability to be there for my family and for people who are overcoming child sexual abuse, whose children are taken and given to pedophile parents, homeless people who need help overcoming personal crisis, and entrepreneurs who call for counsel and support.

I never question whether I am doing what I am called to do, I know that I am. What I do find questionable is why there is no action from most people who say that I have impacted or inspired them in some way. Why after proving myself, offering constant free content, staying relevant and providing education on subjects that are useful to your life, I am not able to afford to get my car out of the impound?

The solution is not for me to go and work at Walmart. This would be ignorant and only silence what God has already given a voice. The reality is that getting a job, any job is not sufficient income. Many jobs like Walmart, and other places that provide jobs and not careers in your field serve as a monetary distraction to pursuing your ultimate goals.

There is not enough money at the end of the paycheck for you to invest in your business or to do what is necessary for you to become more valuable in your business. There are many examples of entrepreneurs who have come through the same channels that I have who, eventually struck oil, or water in the well landing them the client, contract, or level of business that would in fact sustain them. Giving up, and giving in is not the solution especially when you have trademarks, and niche work that solves a problem in the world.

What will it take for you to support me? I ask this question literally ? soliciting your feedback. I offer speaking engagements, I have a memoir, and a new book coming out. You know that I can write, you read my work. You also know that I can speak because I have something to share, that may be a different perspective than others who share their stories. No one can tell my story or add the insights that I do, and the same applies to you.

I am a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist, and Fibromyalgia Certified Therapist. I also have a degree in massage. My massage tables and chair were forfeited during my homelessness, so when I sell enough books I?ll go buy my table again. I have a space to massage.

Seriously, what would it take for you to say, ?I want to be a part of Ressurrection?s success?? or ?I really want to invest/buy/spread the word about her work so that more people can overcome their crisis???

Although child sexual abuse is an uncomfortable subject, it is no longer a silent epidemic. It is however a $124 billion epidemic according to the Center for Disease Control. 80% of substance/narcotics abusers were sexually abused, 80% of those who are acute/chronic mentally ill ? i.e., depression, schizophrenia etc have been sexually abused.

93% of sexual predators are religious, and child sexual abuse accounts for the reason why most people become prostitutes. 97% of homeless women have been sexually abused and/or raped.?I could go on, but my point for this paragraph is that my subject is relevant. You or someone you know have been sexually abused, and I want to end it.

Yes, my husband is amazing. He is awesome and my personal life has nothing to do with business. You go to work, and at the end of two weeks you get a check. An entrepreneur lives a life of faith that most do not understand. Ministry, I will do for free but I do not believe I?m called to live homeless and broken, so that others can be sheltered and whole.

This is not a joke, I am really asking this as a question. I am not sure how else to understand why you watch but are not compelled to invest your resources into what you believe to be impactful work. I am asking in love.

Some people like to wait until the person is accepted by others. Some people will never support your work, they are only around to watch what happens lose, win or draw. Some people want to copy you, so they stick around to study you. Some people are in it for the free content, and never had intentions on buying anything. What I am out to discover is not who I am assigned to, to help but who is assigned to my journey as a part of my target market.

Protest forces Iran assembly speaker to cut short speech: media

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's parliament speaker Ali Larijani had to cut short a public speech on Sunday after people threw shoes and prayer tablets at him, semi-official media reported, disclosing an unusual act of aggression against a senior official.

Larijani, who is embroiled in a public political feud with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was speaking at a religious site in Qom, the city he represents in parliament, on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Shortly after starting his speech, a group of people began chanting slogans against him, according to the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA).

It said Larijani spoke for two to three minutes more, but then a crowd of about 100 Ahmadinejad supporters began throwing shoes and matchbox-sized clay tablets, used in prayer by some Shi'ites, towards him.

Throwing shoes is a serious insult in Muslim countries.

Larijani tried to quiet the crowd, saying "We shouldn't compromise this great celebration with such actions," according to the Mehr news agency, which did not identify the assailants.

His feud with Ahmadinejad burst into the open last week when the president used a speech in parliament to accuse Larijani's family of corruption - a charge the family denies.

Infighting between Iran's top officials has intensified as June's presidential elections approach, and is happening despite calls by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for elected officials to stop their bickering ahead of the vote.

ILNA said some people at the ceremony tried to defend Larijani from the objects, but the crowd began moving in the direction of the speaker and he was forced to leave.

Parliamentary news agency Icana said "a few" people had tried to "create chaos" by chanting slogans against Larijani.

Jackpot! Vegas attracted record number of visitors in 2012

Sin City cashed in last year with a record 39.7 million visitors, and tourism officials are optimistic that the mark won?t stand for long.

About 500,000 more people visited Las Vegas in 2012 than in 2007, the previous record-setting year, according to figures released Friday by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). The record visitation translated into more than $40 billion for the local economy, the organization said.

The increase was brought about by ?a combination of the economy getting marginally better and room rates remaining very low,? said Anthony Curtis, president of LasVegasAdvisor.com, an online newsletter. ?Room rates are still below the figures from four years ago.?

Breaking 40 million
?Las Vegas is well positioned for continued growth in 2013 and on the threshold of hosting more than 40 million visitors,? Rossi Ralenkotter, LVCVA?s president and CEO, said in a statement.

Visitors can expect some new attractions, the most noteworthy being Caesars Entertainment?s $550 milion Linq retail/entertainment project, expected to open late this year.

But Curtis said the city has two things going for it: sizzle and value.

He defines sizzle as young people visiting for the clubs, pools, etc. ?That?s not going away.?

And Vegas remains a value bet. Visitors can stay in rooms that can be two or three times more in other locations, Curtis said.

He also expects more than 40 million visitors next year, barring another economic disaster. But will they spend?

?More people are coming, but they?re spending less,? he said. ?They?re still hoarding. They?re still keeping their cash close to their vest.?
