OXON HILL, Md. (AP) ? The most experienced speller remaining in the National Spelling Bee breezed through most of two semifinal rounds with his usual confidence. But with one word separating him from his first time in the finals, he was flustered.

"Kanaima."

Nicholas Rushlow went through the usual checklist, asking the definition ? an evil spirit, believed to be an avenger. Next he asked for the country of origin, which was British Guyana. Pronouncer Jacques Bailly used it in two sentences.

"Is there anything else I didn't ask?" Rushlow said.

After getting the word right, he mouthed a word that was easy to spell ? "Whoa!" ? then bounded back to his seat and high-fived his few remaining competitors.

Out of 278 participants who gathered at a convention center outside Washington, nine made it to the finals Thursday evening. They nailed words derived from Greek, Latin, French, German, Hawaiian and Afrikaans. They got proper names and obscure medical terms.

Snigdha Nandipati was first up in the finals. The 14-year-old avid reader from San Diego correctly spelled "psammon," which means an ecological community.

Hours earlier, Lena Greenberg, an excitable home-schooled 14-year-old from Philadelphia, became the last to make the finals when she spelled "cholecystitis" ? an inflammation of the gallbladder. She said she didn't know the word but was able to piece it together. After spelling it right, she ran back to her chair, handed out high fives and buried her face in her hands.

"It means so much," Greenberg said. "I can't believe I got here! It doesn't make sense. There were a lot of the words in the semifinals I didn't know."

Forty-one semifinalists, meanwhile, heard the dreaded bell that signals an incorrect spelling. Those included one of the favorites, 10-year-old Vanya Shivashankar of Olathe, Kan. The younger sister of the 2009 champion got the only perfect score in the preliminary rounds.

Breezily confident through the first two semifinal rounds, Shivashankar was flummoxed by "pejerrey," a small fish. She went with "perjere."

"Thank you," she said, and walked offstage with her head held high. She'll have three more years to compete if she chooses.

This is Rushlow's last chance. The 14-year-old from Pickerington, Ohio, has competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee every year since 2008. Last summer, in between swimming practices, he spelled every word in the dictionary for practice, a process that took 600 hours. His mother estimates he's spent 8,000 hours studying over the past five years.

He also has his quirks: He eats pancakes before every bee and has worn the same shirt, a yellow polo with black-and-white stripes, the past three years. He owns more than one and wasn't sure if he had on the same one he wore Wednesday.

"My mom handles that," Rushlow said.

The other fifth-time competitor, Rahul Malayappan, did not make the finals.

Arvind Mahankali, 12, of Bayside Hills, N.Y., a finalist the last two years, made it three years in a row when he spelled "phrontistery." A tennis player and aspiring physicist, he raised his arms in victory as he walked away from the microphone.

The finalists also include Gifton Wright of Spanish Town, Jamaica, who could become the second Jamaican winner in spelling bee history. His coach, the Rev. Glen Archer, also guided the previous Jamaican winner, Jody-Anne Maxwell, in 1998.

Wearing a hooded black cardigan with green trim that suggested the Jamaican flag, Wright got to the finals by spelling "Gleichschaltung," the process of achieving uniformity through oppression.

"I knew it," the unfailingly polite 14-year-old said afterward.

When asked how he knew it, he told a reporter: "Training, sir."

This week, Scripps announced tentative plans for a world spelling bee with teams of spellers from dozens of countries. Once that gets off the ground, the National Spelling Bee would be closed to international participants.

This year's winner gets $30,000 in cash, a trophy, a $2,500 savings bond, a $5,000 scholarship, $2,600 in reference works from the Encyclopedia Britannica and an online language course.

The other finalists are Snigdha Nandipati, 14, of San Diego; Frank Cahill, 14, of Parker, Colo.; Stuti Mishra, 14, of West Melbourne, Fla.; Jordan Hoffman, 14, of Lee's Summit, Mo.; and Emma Ciereszynski, 14, of Dover, N.H.

Ciereszynski spelled "ouabain" ? a toxic substance used as poison on an arrow ? to make the finals.

"I think I might know this!" she said after the word was read. As Bailly read the definition, she smiled, giggled and bounced on her heels.

Her place in the finals secured, she held up her arms and exclaimed, "Yes!"

The quarterly figures include a non-recurring negative effect of USD 1.2 million, which was the net financial effect of changing the propeller shaft seals on Arctic Lady. An employee bonus provision and a stock option programme cost totalling USD 0.4 million are also included in the expenses in the first quarter of 2012, compared to nil in the same period last year.

The useful life for accounting purposes for the Group?s vessels has been reviewed, and from 1 January 2012 it has been changed from 30 to 35 years. Depreciation cost relating the Group?s vessels is therefore lower by USD 0.6 million in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the same period last year. Net cash flow from operating activities was negative by USD 6.9 million in the quarter due to the payment of cash collateral relating to project guarantees, down from a positive USD 2.5 million in the same quarter last year. Net cash flow to investing activities was USD 181.6 million, notably consisting of net investments in marketable securities of USD 95.0 million and investments in vessels and newbuildings of USD 79.4 million.

Net cash flows from financing activities was USD 190.0 million, including USD 202.0 million of net share issue proceeds. The net decrease in cash and cash equivalents for the period was therefore USD 1.6 million. The Group?s financial position has strengthened during the first quarter due to new equity raised. At the end of the first quarter 2012, the group held USD 38.2 million in cash and cash equivalents, up from USD 20.0 million as at 31 March 2011, as well as USD 185.6 million in marketable securities, up from USD 51.9 million in promissory note at the end of the first quarter 2011. The equity has increased from USD 75.0 million at the end of the first quarter 2011 to USD 343.0 million one year later, mainly due to share capital increases during the period.

As a writer, we can glean from his ideas the truth about relationships and challenge ourselves to write romantic stories that are more realistic and much more complex in nature.

1. ?Chivalry is Fantasy ? Tolkien writes: ?There is in our Western culture the romantic chivalric tradition still strong, though as a product of Christendom (yet by no means the same as Christian ethics) the times are inimical to it. ?It idealizes ?love? ? and as far as it goes can be very good, since it takes in far more than physical pleasure, and enjoins if not purity, at least fidelity, and so self-denial, ?service?, courtesy, honor, and courage? This is, of course, false and at best make-believe? (p. 48-49). ?Tolkien believes that this type of love is best kept to the fantasy of fiction and is not possible in the real world. ?It works great to make lovers swoon, and it is nice to dream about it, but he says that chivalric love makes a man forget a woman?s desires by placing her on a pedestal, idealizing her until she is not real. ??It takes, or at any rate has in the past taken, the young man?s eye off women as they are, as companions in shipwreck not guiding stars? (p. 49). ?It is the idealized woman on the cover of Cosmo who is airbrushed until she is a Barbie doll. ?Lately, as in the case of the?Twilight novels, this ideal is reversed so that the female places the male on the pedestal. ?Edward is the perfect guy who does not exist. ?Tolkien says that what this does is ?make young folk look for a ?love? that will keep them always nice and warm in a cold world, without any effort of theirs; and the incurably romantic go on looking even in the squalor of the divorce courts? (p. 49). ?It can only lead to disaster. ?Should our fiction teach our young the truth or lead them down a path of fantasy that destroys any hope of a true relationship in the future? ?I say tell the truth.

2. ?Observations About Women ? Tolkien writes: ?The sexual impulse makes women (naturally when unspoiled more unselfish) very sympathetic and understanding, or especially desirous of being so (or seeming so), and very ready to enter into all the interests, as far as they can, from ties to religion, of the young man they are attracted to? Under this impulse they can in fact often achieve very remarkable insight and understanding, even of things otherwise outside their natural range; for it is their gift to be receptive, stimulated, fertilized (in many other matters than the physical) by the male?It is their natural avenue to love? (p. 49). ?According to Tolkien, women are unique from men in that they have the innate ability to love regardless of the situation or how many times they have been hurt by the one they love. ?They are more forgiving than men in this regard, and it is in their nature to not strike back and that women only do so because the men in their lives have warped this natural nature. ?He says that ?women who are flighty, or even plain wanton ? I don?t refer to mere flirtatiousness, the sparring practice for the real combat, but to women who are too silly to take even love seriously, or are actually so depraved as to enjoy ?conquests?, or even enjoy the giving of pain ? but these are abnormalities, even though false teaching, bad upbringing, and corrupt fashions may encourage them? (p. 50). ?He does not blame the woman for her ?unnatural? behavior, but her surroundings. ?Women naturally love.

3. ?Tolkien as Feminist ? The most interesting thing he has to say about women is this: ?A young woman, even one ?economically independent? as they say now (it usually really means economic subservience to male commercial employers instead of to a father or a family), begins to think of the ?bottom drawer? and dream of a home, almost at once. ?If she really falls in love, the shipwreck may end on the rocks. ?Anyway, women are much less romantic and much more practical?They do not want a guiding star. ?They may idealize a plain young man into a hero; but they do not really need any such glamour either to fall in love or remain in it. ?It they have any delusion it is that they can ?reform? men? (p. 50). ?The first idea is feminist in that it shows that he sees women who are successful in the business world as still working in a patriarchal society according to the roles that men have defined for them. ?He seems to use a disdainful tone toward women?s roles being defined by the men in a male dominated society.

4. ?Observations About Men ? Tolkien writes: ?No man, however truly he loved his betrothed as bride as a young man, has lived faithful to her as a wife in mind and body without deliberate conscious exercise of the?will, without self-denial? When the glamour wears off, or merely works a bit thin, they think they have made a mistake, and that the real soul-mate is still to find. ?The real soul-mate too often proves to be the next sexually attractive person that comes along? (p. 51). ?Men are driven by one thing (and we all know what that is) and it is a struggle for a man to stay with one woman his entire life. ?I can say that from experience it is the love for my wife as a person that has kept me with her these 14 years. ?I suppose there is a little of the chivalric within me, but the reason I stay faithful to my wife and fight the natural desire of looking at other women is because she and I have formed not just a relationship of lovers but a relationship along the nature of what a best friend would be. ?It is no wonder that so many marriages end in divorce. ?Men are naturally prone to wander. ?Tolkien continues: ?Only a?very wise man at the?end of his life could make a sound judgement concerning whom, amongst the total possible chances, he ought most profitably have married! ?Nearly all marriages, even happy ones, are mistakes; in the sense that almost certainly (in a more perfect world, or even with a little more care in this very imperfect one) both partners might have found more suitable mates. ?But the ?real soul-mate? is the one you are actually married to? (p. 51). ?Men need to realize that the person they married is indeed someone who is perfect for them if the reasons they married them are pure and not merely sexual. ?The problem with marriage today is that people do not marry their best friend, but their best sex partner. ?If we all married our best friend, our marriages would work out much better.

5. ?Real Relationships Hurt ? There is an element of risk in any relationship, but our society has put padding on all things that could hurt us, and so we automatically think that our relationships should be the same. ?Tolkien writes: ??the truly great and splendid in this fallen world is more nearly achieved by ?failure? and suffering? (p. 52). ?We have as our guides only ?prudence, wisdom (rare in youth, too late in age), a clean heart, and fidelity of?will? (p. 52). ?I cannot count the times that my wife and I have had difficult moments in our relationship of 15 years. ?We always manage to work it out. ?If our relationship was purely sexual, it would have died out a long time ago. ?I love my wife because she loves me and cares deeply about me. ?I love my wife because she is at the core my best friend on this earth. ?The things that have been struggles for us have indeed made us stronger. ?We do not hold grudges, do not let the sun go down until we have made up, and try our best to forgive one another when we fall down.

Wichita students develop campaign to teach kids, teens about Internet

The comment, posted on a Kansas high school student?s Twitter page during a field trip last fall, insulted Gov. Sam Brownback, was flagged by the governor?s staff and landed the student in her principal?s office.

It also made international news. The student, Emma Sullivan, now has nearly 12,500 followers on Twitter. She graduated this month and still hears feedback, good and bad, about what she said.

?All from one tweet,? says Wespi, 18, a recent graduate of Northwest High School in Wichita. ?That shows how you never know who might be watching.?

Wespi and two classmates, Taryn Thomas and Broc Cramer, launched the ?Wonder Who?s Watching?? campaign to teach children and teens about Internet safety. Earlier this month, the students were awarded first place in the public relations category of an international career development conference in Utah.

Wespi said students out of school for summer vacation tend to spend more time online, so it?s important to show them and their parents how to stay safe on computers and cellphones.

?The No. 1 tip we tell everyone, whether it?s a kid or an adult, is to think twice before posting anything ? a photo, a video, a status,? he said. ?Whatever you put online lives there forever.?

Wespi said he and his teammates made presentations to elementary school students and were surprised how many had cellphones and Facebook pages.

?So many hands went up ? kids in third and fourth grade,? he said. ?They?re growing up with technology. It?s just a part of everyday life, and lots of them have no idea about the dangers of the Internet.?

Wespi encouraged children and parents to talk about those dangers and to visit sites such as NetSmartz.org, a website sponsored by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children that features advice and even interactive games to teach online safety.

The Northwest High students also share tips on the campaign?s Facebook page, at www.facebook.com/wwwcampaign, and on Twitter at @wwwcampaign.

Wespi said Web safety gets a little trickier as children get older, because teens don?t like the idea of parents monitoring what they do online. He said a good compromise is for parents to friend their children on Facebook to see the sorts of things they?re posting, but to also give them some space and privacy.

?As long as a parent is clear about, ?This is for your safety. It could affect whether you get scholarships or a job in the future,? that?s what students need to know,? Wespi said.

He said his group emphasizes the positive sides of the sites such as Facebook and Twitter, which many teachers and schools use to reach out to students.

Oil Kings' boss Laxdal reflects on season

EDMONTON - Fresh off of his team?s charter flight home from the Memorial Cup, Derek Laxdal had a look to him that he?d lost touch with in the last few months. He was relaxed.

They went 67-22-3-4 this year in their run to the Memorial Cup, posted the best regular-season record in the WHL and won their first everything (playoff game, series, conference title and league championship) since re-joining the league in 2007. None of that was lost on Laxdal, who patrolled the executive flight centre at Edmonton?s International Airport, patting his players on their backs and making sure they were in good spirits.

?You go 67-22 and whatever it was. You ask me at the start of the season, ?Coach would you take that?? I?d say, ?Yeah, no problem,?? he said.

?You look at our organization three years ago, it was 16 wins going into 67 wins with playoffs and playing for the Memorial Cup, Western Hockey League champions, you know, what a season.?

On-ice skills aside, the Oil Kings greatest asset this season was their resiliency. Third period deficits were rarely insurmountable, highly-touted opponents didn?t intimidate and even after rolling through to the WHL final with one loss, a 2-1 Winterhawks series lead couldn?t break the Oil Kings.

?Our group has really matured in the last two years and you could see that, just the way we play and the way we carry ourselves and the way the players have developed,? Laxdal said.

?We?re going to be gone for 2 ? months now and when they come back we?ll go, ?Wow have they ever matured.? We saw it last year in our players, the Keegan Lowes, the Griffin Reinharts, the Mitch Morozes.

?We?re really looking forward to training camp in August and putting some new pieces into the puzzle. We know what it takes to win in the Western Hockey League, now we get to step back a bit and say ?What does it take to win a Memorial Cup?? and if you look at St. John, you look at London, you look at Shawinigan it?s three pretty good hockey clubs that were built for that tournament.?

While the coach wouldn?t take his eyes off of what was attainable during the team?s playoff run, he said on Friday afternoon that his team ? at an average age of 17 ? years ? was built to peak next season.

?Our goal at the start of the season was to get deep into the playoffs and winning the Western Hockey League, obviously you want to do that, but next year?s our year,? he said. ?We?ve got 20 of the 25 guys coming back and this year?s experience is only going to help us going into training camp, it will make it that much easier for these guys coming back. ?They?ve been there. Now there are no excuses for not being there (again), right? These kids coming back can take these experiences and move forward next year.?

All Maryland NCAA lacrosse final as Maryland tops Duke, 16-10

? Monday's NCAA tournament final will be an all-Maryland affair.

The Maryland men's lacrosse team punched its ticket to the national title game with a 16-10 thumping of No. 3 seed Duke on Saturday evening before an announced 31,774 at Gillette Stadium.

The Terps, who advanced to the tournament final as an unseeded team for the second consecutive season, will meet No. 1 seed Loyola at 1 p.m. Monday. The Greyhounds (17-1) outlasted No. 4 seed Notre Dame, 7-5, earlier in the day.
Monday's title game will feature two teams from Maryland for the first time since 1979 when Johns Hopkins defeated the Terps, 15-9. Loyola will play for its first championship since 1990 when it lost to Syracuse, 21-9. Maryland, which won NCAA crowns in 1973 and 1975, fell to Virginia, 9-7, last year.

For the second straight year, Maryland ? which improved to 12-5 ? beat the Blue Devils in the national semifinal round. Almost a year ago, the Terps defeated Duke, 9-4, at M&T Bank Stadium.

Junior midfielder Kevin Cooper paced Maryland with one goal and four assists. Senior midfielder Drew Snider scored four times ? his third hat trick in three NCAA tournament games this spring, and senior attackman Joe Cummings added one goal and three assists.

Shooting efficiency was a huge factor in the Terps' victory. They scored four goals on five shots in the second quarter and 16 goals on just 29 shots for the contest.

?I just think we were finding each other in good spots on the field,? said Snider, who has scored 10 goals in the tournament. ?We all felt really comfortable with our offensive game plan. I thought we were very organized.?

Coach John Tillman said the players have the green light to shoot with the caveat that they have to make smart decisions and also consider whether they might be putting the defense at risk if that unit had to defend a long possession.

?If you feel like you have an opportunity, go,? Tillman said. ?We can't win if guys are worried about me yanking them or yelling at them. So I think players need to play, and we give them good guidance all week.?

The Terps, who also earned a berth in the tournament final in 1997, never trailed against the Blue Devils, who never got closer than one goal with 27.5 seconds left in the first quarter.

After Maryland scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 9-4 advantage, Duke went on a 4-1 run to trim the deficit to 10-8 with 13:34 left in the fourth period. But the Terps scored six straight goals to cement the outcome.

Duke (15-5) was led by senior midfielder Justin Turri, who posted two goals and one assist. But Wolf, who entered the game leading the team in both assists (31) and points (63), was limited to two assists by freshman defenseman Goran Murray. Wolf had not scored a goal against Maryland in the teams' previous two meetings this season.

Blue Devils coach John Danowski said he sensed a wave of confidence from the Terps bench that his team couldn't match.

?I thought they were much more confident than we were,? he said. ?I thought that it was very different, and we know that. Maryland kids are tough and rugged young men and very confident. Egypt to pick Islamist or military man as president

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood said on Friday its candidate in Egypt's first free presidential vote would fight a run-off next month with ex-air force chief Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister of deposed leader Hosni Mubarak.

This week's first-round vote has polarised Egyptians between those determined to avoid handing the presidency back to a man from Mubarak's era and those fearing an Islamist monopoly of ruling institutions. The run-off will be held on June 16 and 17.

The election marks a crucial step in a messy and often bloody transition to democracy, overseen by a military council that has pledged to hand power to a new president by July 1.

The second round threatens further turbulence. Opponents of Shafiq have vowed to take to the streets if he is elected.

But to supporters, Shafiq's military background offers reassurance that he can restore security, a major demand of the population 15 months after Mubarak's ouster.

A victory for the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi could worsen tensions between resurgent Islamists and the powerful army, which sees itself as the guardian of the state.

Christians and secular liberals anxious about their own freedoms and the fate of Egypt's vital tourist industry will fret about a promised Brotherhood push for Islamic law.

"Now Egyptians will have to choose between the revolution and the counter-revolution. The next vote will be equivalent to holding a referendum on the revolution," Mohamed Beltagy, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood's party, told Reuters.

If Mursi becomes president, Islamists will control most ruling institutions - but not the military - in Egypt, the most populous Arab nation, consolidating electoral gains made by fellow-Islamists in other Arab countries in the past year.

Israel has nervously watched the Islamist rise, especially in Egypt, its old enemy until a 1979 peace treaty. Mursi vaguely advocates a "review" of the pact, but the Brotherhood says it will not tear it up. Shafiq has vowed to uphold it.

The bluntly-spoken military man came from behind in a race in which former Arab League chief Amr Moussa and ex-Brotherhood member Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh were early favourites.

His late surge reflected the anxiety of many Egyptians about a breakdown of law and order and the often violent political disputes that have punctuated an army-led transition since a popular revolt ousted Mubarak on February 11, 2011.

The Brotherhood announced early on Friday that the run-off would be between Shafiq and Mursi after almost all votes were counted. A member of Shafiq's campaign also said Mursi and Shafiq were in the lead, but that counting was not complete.

Official results are not expected until Tuesday.

Aides to other candidates consistently put Mursi ahead but gave shifting tallies for second place through the night.

The Brotherhood's Guidance Office, its top body, was meeting to mull a campaign "to galvanise Islamists and Egyptian voters to face the bloc of the 'feloul'," a Brotherhood official said, using a scornful Arabic term for "remnants" of Mubarak's order.

Tareq Farouq, 34, a Cairo driver, said: "I'm in shock. How could this happen? The people don't want Mursi or Shafiq. We're sick of both. They are driving people back to Tahrir Square."

Many Christians, who form about a tenth of Egypt's 82 million people, complained of discrimination in Mubarak's day, but are likely to vote for Shafiq in preference to an Islamist.

The Brotherhood may be riding high, but to win the run-off it will need to woo the votes of other candidates such as its old adherent Abol Fotouh, who took 20 percent of the vote on an inclusive platform, according to the Brotherhood's count.

Two days of first-round voting went off calmly with polls closing on Thursday. Monitors reported no major infringements, although some candidates grumbled about their rivals' conduct.

The Brotherhood official, who asked not to be named, said that with votes counted from about 12,800 of the roughly 13,100 polling stations, Mursi had 25 percent, Shafiq 23 percent, Abol Fotouh 20 percent and leftist Hamdeen Sabahy 19 percent.

Election committee officials said late on Thursday that about half of Egypt's 50 million eligible voters had cast ballots. The Brotherhood official put the turnout at 40 percent.
