Sony unloads 'Sony City Osaka' building for $1.2 billion, will remain as lessee

In a bid to bolster its bottom line, Sony's been selling properties like a desperate monopoly player, and the latest space on the board to go is the Sony City Osaka building for 111.1 billion yen ($1.2 billion). That follows the sale of its NY headquarters for a similar sum, and the move of its global HQ from Sweden to Tokyo. The Osaka building has been purchased by a Japanese holding company who will lease the building back to Sony for a period of at least five years, which seems to be the trend for electronics companies lately. The Japanese conglomerate said all the property deals are being made to "transform its business portfolio and reorganize its assets." Translation? Sony needs the cash, natch.

Navigation App Waze Adds Road Closure Reporting Feature, Says It Now Has 40M Users

Waze, the app that uses crowdsourced data to build its maps and provide real-time traffic information, is introducing a new feature today allowing users to report road closures. This seems like a pretty natural extension of what Waze does ? drivers could already report things like accidents, so this is just giving them another way to get important information into the system. In fact, spokesperson Michal Habdank-Kolaczkowski told me that users were already doing in an ad hoc way, where the names of roads would be edited so they said (for example), "Capitol Ave CLOSED FOR CONSTRUCTION."

Armed with a 52-ounce coffee mug, a Washington state man headed to his local Starbucks to make history.?

Forty-eight shots of espresso, some protein powder, two bananas, a few caramel drizzle Frappuccino chips, some vanilla bean and a little soy later, Beau Chevassus ordered what may be the most expensive Starbucks drink ever on Feb. 9. He dubbed the $47.30 monstrosity the "Quadriginoctuple Frap."

Starbucks employees in Enumclaw, Wash., were eager to prepare a potentially record-setting drink, Beau Chevassus said.

While the drink totaled nearly $50, he didn't actually pay for it. Starbucks gave it to him for free because it was his 27th birthday. He initially ordered 40 shots of espresso, but the baristas bumped him up to 48 as they got into the record-setting spirit. Chevassus posted his experience from the Starbucks in Enumclaw, Wash., just outside the company's home base in Seattle, on YouTube, where it has more than 140,000 views.

Starbucks did not comment on whether Chevassus' order is a record. But he has apparently dwarfed what is believed to be the previous record, more than doubling the?$23.60 concoction purchased a year ago this month by Logan Warren of Geek on Call. That drink featured "one Java Chip Frappuccino in a Trenta cup,?16 shots of espresso, a shot of soy milk, caramel flavoring, banana puree, strawberry puree, vanilla beans, matcha powder, protein powder, and a drizzle of caramel and mocha.''?

Beau Chevassus took several days to consume the prodigious Starbucks beverage.

"I did it for fun, for a bit of entertainment and to see if it is at all possible," Chevassus told the New York Daily News. "I was surprised how cool the Starbucks employees were. They seemed almost more interested in trying to set the record than I was."

Chevassus only took a few sips from the caffeine lake while in the store and then drank about half of it over the next few days.?

U.S. troops getting body armor from charities

TroopsDirect founder Aaron Negherbon (TroopsDirect)

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned this week that looming military spending cuts ?will result in a serious erosion of readiness across the force.?

The caution comes as no surprise to Aaron Negherbon, whose nonprofit helps soldiers circumvent government fiscal challenges and red tape to get critical equipment to combat troops.

?I?ve been told by units that are over there, as well as units that are still stateside, that they are already feeling budget pinches as a result of the state of affairs in D.C.,? said Negherbon, TroopsDirect founder. ?We?re hearing more statements that are along the lines of, ?Our supply chains have been minimized, and we can?t get stuff in the time that we need.??

For the past three years, Negherbon says his handful of volunteers near Oakland, Calif., have secured and expedited 60,000 pounds of vital supplies like stretchers, communications gear, protective goggles and more to infantry units and special operations forces around the globe.

But then a few weeks ago, the former real estate broker fielded a call for something never requested before: bulletproof vests.

?We need body armor,? Negherbon recalls the veteran Army sergeant saying. ?He said, ?We?re getting ready to deploy, and they are only giving us 30 of the 60 vests that we need.? The way he laid it out to me ? it was part budget and part just general policy of what the unit was going to be issued as opposed to what they needed to have issued.?

The sergeant told Negherbon 60 soldiers in his unit, which deploys to Afghanistan in early April, are route-clearing specialists assigned to eliminate roads of obstacles, primarily improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

?It?s not like they are chefs or secretaries,? Negherbon said. ?They are the guys that go out there and identify and defuse the bombs.

For security reasons, Negherbon declined to identify the Army sergeant who called him. But he says he verified the request with a unit commander before placing the order. Negherbon sent Yahoo News a copy of the invoice for 31 modular operator plate carriers (MOPC) by Condor. The total cost of $1,700 was relatively low because the sergeant said they already had the protective plates for the MOPCs.

However, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon said every soldier deployed to Afghanistan is issued the Improved Outer Tactical Vest (IOTV).

?It provides for maximum protection, as the Army has conducted exhaustive testing on that system. Certainly fit for route-clearing operations,? Matthew Bourke, the spokesman, said in an email to Yahoo News.

The military is already operating on less money than planned and without an approved annual spending bill, but Bourke is adamant that his branch has no shortage of body armor or other supplies.

?That is just not accurate,? he said. Bourke did acknowledge that Special Forces troops and certain other units are provided the MOPC-style vests because some soldiers find the design lighter and more mobile.

?The MOPC is approved for wear, but does not offer the protection rates IOTVs do,? he said. ?When developing body armor, protection has always been our primary concern.?

Negherbon said troops tell him the IOTV is antiquated and cumbersome.

?Like issuing a musket when a shotgun is needed,? he said.

Regardless of which vest is better, Negherbon said TroopsDirect policy has always been to go with what the boots on the ground want.

?If they ask for a certain item, that?s what we give them,? he said. ?They know what is best for them.?

TroopsDirect raised $786,813 in 2011 through corporate backers, grants and individual donors. Negherbon, who drew a $43,750 salary, said 87 cents of every dollar went directly to troop-related expenses.

Troops have responded by blanketing the organization?s Facebook wall with thanks.

?Sir, I spoke with our Seabee's this past week and they wanted me to convey their greatest appreciation in the boxes of gloves and safety glasses sent to them! Truly a blessing to them so they can finish the mission!?

?Care packages are nice but they aren?t keeping us alive and our arms and legs intact like your TroopsDirect shipments are.?

Automatic budget cuts slated to begin March 1 could cost the Department of Defense a possible $46 billion through the end of September.

?Ultimately, sequestration and the continuing resolution will affect readiness and training and fleet and equipment maintenance,? wrote Bourke, the Army spokesman. ?It will affect acquisition and modernizing our equipment. It's going to affect soldiers in combat. But, not soldiers that are currently there or those set to deploy in this next round. The units after that, however, will start to feel the effects.?

In the meantime, TroopsDirect expects the bulletproof vests to be ready for shipping in early March.

?We?ve never had a request like this,? Negherbon said. ?But certainly for obvious reasons we are filling that order in rapid fashion.?

Barack Obama has ?an amazing touch,? said Tiger Woods on Tuesday after a private weekend round of golf with the US President.

Woods, currently ranked No. 2 in the world, and Obama teed off together against US trade representative Ron Kirk and Houston Astros owner Jim Crane at the luxury Floridian Yacht & Golf Club, New York Daily News reported.?

Woods and Obama won the game, and the 14-time major champion had plenty of praise for his partner?s golfing skills, Agence France-Presse reported.

"Playing with Mr President was pretty cool," Woods told reporters after a practice round at the WGC-Accenture Matchplay Championship in Arizona, according to ABC News.

"He hit the ball well, and he's got an amazing touch. He can certainly chip and putt.

New Delhi:? Nearly three decades after the inauguration of the much-revered Tata Football Academy, electronics giants Panasonic has set up a state-of-the-art residential football school, similar to the one in Jamshedpur, in Haryana.

It is already running an academy in Rohtak, and another, likely to be set up in Gurgaon, is in the pipeline.

The electronics major did not renew its three-year contract with the national football team after it ended on December 31 last year, as its focus shifted from brand building to grassroots development of the sport.

"We realised it's time for grassroots development in football, so opening up academies in India was the way to go," Manish Sharma, managing director, consumer product division, Panasonic India, told PTI.

"It will include grooming young talents, giving them education, taking care of their expenses for training, equipments etc. We have opened our first academy in Rohtak, and another one is coming up in Gurgaon.

"We want to build the sport through sports people, to be training young people. 14 is the starting age... in the near future we will open up academies for those below under-14," Sharma added.

Asked about the company's decision to not renew its ties with the All India Football Federation (AIFF), he said, "The idea now is not to build brand... It is about contributing to the sport. If it's about brand building only, then we can be associated with Bollywood or cricket."

Microsoft starts taking orders for 128GB Surface Pro, $999 gets one shipped on March 1st

Microsoft has been having troubles keeping the 128GB model Surface Pro tablet on virtual and actual store shelves, but it looks like the drought, as promised, is ending. The tablet's now up for pre-order on the Microsoft Store website with an estimated March 1st ship date. Best Buy will also be receiving shipments of the slate soon and is also willing to take your money now to reserve one. Alas, our friends north of the border in Canada are still without a 128GB Surface purchase option, but at least the folks at the Surface Blog have promised to provide more info on the matter sometime soon. Just when you thought Mary J. Blige's financial problems couldn't get any worse ... TMZ has learned the singer has been hit with a $900,000 tax lien in the State of New Jersey.

Blige -- who was JUST sued earlier this month for allegedly defaulting on a $500k bank loan -- is now on the hook for $901,769.65 in back taxes to the Garden State, this according to official documents obtained by TMZ.

The tax lien is the latest in a string of financial woes for the Grammy winner -- just last year, Mary J. was sued for allegedly defaulting on a $2.2 million bank loan ..? and before that, her charity was sued for not paying back a $250k loan.

Back in May, Blige blamed the charity's financial issues on the staff -- saying, "The problem is that I didn't have the right people in the right places doing the right things."

We reached out to Blige's camp for comment on the tax lien -- but so far, radio silence.

Facebook's new Graph Search won't help pedophiles find victims

Within seconds, Facebook's new Graph Search can show you a list of single men who work as financial advisors in New York City. That's great if you're on the prowl for that sort of thing. But what if you were a shady character with less acceptable tastes? What if you typed "women under 17 who live near me" into the search box?

You'd be out of luck.

In order to keep users between the ages of 13 and 17 safer, Facebook keeps certain information and status updates from being shared beyond friends of friends. And as a blog post by Facebook's safety team explains, Graph Search takes the need for such safety precautions into account as well. "For certain searches that could help to identify a young person by age or by their location," the post elaborates, "results will only show to that person's friends, or friends of friends who are also between the age of 13-17."

Attempting searches which could produce information related to minors leads to a simple message explaining that Facebook "couldn't find any results for this search." (This is assuming that you're not between the ages of 13 and 17 and have friends or friends of friends who'd match the search query.)

While some aspects of Facebook can make us want to reach for tinfoil hats and scream about the need for privacy and the like, the existence of this particular Graph Search safety measure will certainly put some of our minds at ease a tiny bit.

Hudson?s way: Duncan chef takes to national airwaves in Top Chef Canada Competition

It was now or never for Duncan chef Daniel Hudson.

Hudson, 29, just returned from Toronto from filming in the Top Chef Canada competition.

And although he?s been instructed to keep his lips sealed on the outcome of the show, which airs March 18, he?s pumped to tell folks in his community about the experience.

?I had been wanting to do it for awhile,? he explained of the competition that sees the winner take home a grand prize of $100,000, a G.E. Monogram kitchen worth $30,000 and Ceasarstone Quartz kitchen surfaces valued at $25,000.

Fellow chef and mentor, Vancouver?s Dale MacKay, who took the Top Chef title in the show?s first season, put a good word in for Hudson.

Hudson, the owner of Hudson?s On First, had planned to participate in the second season, but had to make a trip back to his home-town in England after his mother died.

When applications for the third season were called, he didn?t think twice about throwing his name in the hat.

?I filled out the application, submitted a video and then I did a telephone interview. They picked me to go to Vancouver where I did a cook-off at the institute and then I waited for about two to three weeks,? he explained.

Hudson was ?over the moon? when he got the call to be part of the show.

?It?s pretty surreal to be on TV and to be around all those celebrities and chefs,? he said.

He was one of 16 chefs chosen across Canada to battle it out in the show?s cook-off challenges in front of head judge Mark McEwan, resident judge Shereen Arazm, series host Lisa Ray and a smorgasbord of special guests.

Those guests include WWE female champion Trish Stratus, comedian Russell Peters, Survivorman host Les Stroud, the ladies of The Real Housewives of Vancouver, Juno-winning singer-songwriter Jann Arden, Top Chef: Las Vegas winner Michael Voltaggio, Restaurant: Impossible host Robert Irvine, Chuck?s Week Off chef Chuck Hughes and chef David Rocco.

?It was very big brother-ish, with cameras all the time and celebrities there,? he said. ?But it just became part of the daily routine.?

Hudson and his competitors participated in challenges designed to showcase their skills as chefs while impressing with original recipes.

?The comments, the good and bad, you take them on board and my ethic is you got to use them to your advantage,? Hudson explained.

The experience will surely find its place in his day-to-day routine running his own restaurant.

?I wouldn?t have changed anything if I could,? he said.

And business at Hudson?s, Duncan?s newest French cuisine fine-dining, is booming.

?It?s been smoking busy, even before the show,? Hudson said of the restaurant which opened in November and is located on Duncan?s First Street.

Hudson began his cooking career 12 years ago in one of the U.K.?s finest country manor houses, Eastwell Manor.

He trained solely from on-the-job experience, learning and gathering information from head chefs over the years.

He also recently wrapped up a two-year stint with Hilary?s Cheese in Cowichan Bay as an artisan cheese-maker.

Top Chef Canada premieres March 18 at 10 p.m. on the Food Network Canada.

GOP warns Obama against tax increases, spending

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans dismissed President Barack Obama's State of the Union address as nothing more than big government spending and more tax increases. But a brief sip of water may have gotten more immediate attention than any policy ideas.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's mid-speech swig from a small Poland Spring water bottle during his GOP response generated instant reaction in social media circles and on cable television, even as Republicans offered fresh appeals on the economy and promises to rein in federal spending.

Rubio appeared to wipe away sweat during his rebuttal from the Speaker's conference room in the U.S. Capitol. At one point he stretched out his left hand, grabbed a small plastic water bottle and took a brief swig of water. As the water break gained notice online, Rubio sent a photo of the bottle from his Twitter account.

In his GOP address, Rubio urged Obama to "abandon his obsession with raising taxes" and said the president had shifted the nation away from free-market economic principles that had helped middle-class families achieve prosperity.

"Presidents in both parties ? from John F. Kennedy to Ronald Reagan ? have known that our free-enterprise economy is the source of our middle-class prosperity. But President Obama? He believes it's the cause of our problems," Rubio said.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, in a separate tea party response, said both parties had failed voters by driving up trillion-dollar deficits. "Washington acts in a way that your family never could ? they spend money they do not have, they borrow from future generations, and then they blame each other for never fixing the problem," Paul said.

Republicans sought to characterize Obama as overly reliant on government, even as the president made his case to the nation that he could generate new jobs without raising the federal deficit. Defending his policies against GOP critics, Obama said the nation needed a "smarter government" instead of a bigger one and pledged to boost the minimum wage and increase federal spending to fix roads and bridges.

Both Obama's address to Congress and the Republican responses around the Capitol sought to position each party as the champion of average Americans in a nation still grappling with high unemployment and a slow economic recovery. Republicans noted that the nation's jobless rate ticked up to 7.9 percent in January and the economy shrank at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the final months of 2012.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Obama offered the American people "little more than more of the same 'stimulus' policies that have failed to fix our economy and put Americans back to work. We cannot grow the middle class and foster job creation by growing government and raising taxes."

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman accused Obama of promoting "the same big-government policies that have failed to get our economy up and running again."

Paul, a tea party favorite, said both parties had been guilty of "protecting their sacred cows" and engaging in "backroom deals in which everyone up here wins but every taxpayer loses." He said he would propose to balance the budget in five years and urged lawmakers to return to their duty of passing budgets. If not, Paul said, voters should "sweep the place clean. Limit their terms and send them home."

Rubio, a rising star in the Republican party and a potential 2016 presidential contender, pointed to his Miami roots to address Obama's frequent portrayal of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney ? and his party ? as only caring about the wealthiest Americans. Rubio said he still lived in the "same working-class neighborhood I grew up in" and his neighbors "aren't millionaires" but retirees, workers and immigrants.

"His favorite attack of all is that those who don't agree with him ? that we only care about rich people," Rubio said.

Rubio pre-recorded his speech in Spanish for Spanish-language networks, a nod to Republicans who have said that they must do more to address their deficit with Hispanic voters. Obama won 71 percent of Hispanics last year against Romney, prompting concerns about the party's ability to compete with Democrats in future elections.

Wireless power transfer technology for high capacity transit

Feb. 12, 2013 ? The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) have developed a wireless power transfer technology that can be applied to high capacity transportation systems such as railways, harbor freight, and airport transportation and logistics. The technology supplies 60 kHz and 180 kW of power remotely to transport vehicles at a stable, constant rate.

KAIST and KRRI have just successfully showcased the wireless power transfer technology to the public by testing it on the railroad tracks at Osong Station in Korea. Originally, this technology was developed as part of an electric vehicle system introduced by KAIST in 2011 known as the On-line Electric Vehicle (OLEV).

OLEV does not need to be parked at a charging station to have a fully powered battery. It gets charged while running, idling, and parking, enabling a reduction in size of the reserve battery down to one-fifth of the battery on board a regular electric car. The initial models of OLEV, a bus and a tram, receive 20 kHz and 100 kW power at an 85% transmission efficiency rate while maintaining a 20cm air gap between the underbody of vehicle and the road surface. OLEV complies with the national and international standards of 62.5 mG, a safety net for electromagnetic fields. In July 2013, for the first time since its development, OLEV will run on a regular road, an inner city route in the city of Gumi, requiring 40 minutes of driving each way.

This technology demonstration offers further support that OLEV can be utilized for large-scale systems. Professor Dong-Ho Cho, Director of Center for Wireless Power Transfer Technology Business Development at KAIST, explained the recent improvements to OLEV:

"We have greatly improved the OLEV technology from the early development stage by increasing its power transmission density by more than three times. The size and weight of the power pickup modules have been reduced as well. We were able to cut down the production costs for major OLEV components, the power supply, and the pickup system, and in turn, OLEV is one step closer to being commercialized."

If trains receive power wirelessly, the costs of railway wear and tear will be dramatically reduced. There will be no power rails, including electrical poles, required for the establishment of a railway system, and accordingly, lesser space will be needed. Tunnels will be built on a smaller scale, lowering construction costs. In addition, it will be helpful to overcome major obstacles that discourage the construction of high speed railway systems such as noise levels and problems in connecting pantograph and power rails.

KAIST and KRRI plan to apply the wireless power transfer technology to trams in May and high speed trains in September.

GOP leader opposes new tax on Wis. iron mine

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Senate's top Republican says he's against imposing a so-called tonnage tax on a company looking to open an iron mine in far northwestern Wisconsin.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said during an address at a Madison business convention Wednesday some Republican senators have been talking about including the tax in a massive bill that would overhaul Wisconsin's mining regulations. The tax would require iron mining companies to pay taxes according to how much iron they extract.

Fitzgerald says the tax would signal mining isn't welcome in Wisconsin and Gov. Scott Walker almost certainly would veto any bill that contains it.

The bill is designed to ease the regulatory path for Gogebic Taconite's plans for a massive iron mine just south of Lake Superior.

Imagine you are on vacation and find yourself running low on a few necessities. You stop by a small convenience store to stock up and are immediately faced with the usual suspects: cramped aisles lined with chips and candy, a ?beer cave? in the back, an oddly placed rack of discount t-shirts?and a lottery showcase behind the counter?a veritable gambler?s paradise. Normally you wouldn?t play; today, however, you?re overcome by the urge to try your luck. But what game do you choose? Do you select among the dozen or so varieties of scratch tickets? Or do you opt for the classic pick-6 lotto?

Your decision may depend on whether you?re vacationing in Juneau, Alaska or Jupiter, Florida?and it all comes down to temperature. Recent research suggests that warm weather impairs our ability to make complex decisions?and even causes us to shy away from making these decisions in the first place.

In the sweltering heat of a Florida summer, choosing between dozens of scratch tickets may seem like an insurmountable task?and one you?d rather not make, given the alternative of a relatively simple pick-6 lotto (just grab a ticket, write down a few numbers, and you?re done).? In the cooler climes of Alaska, on the other hand, your ability to make complex decisions?such as choosing your favorite scratch ticket?should be unaffected.? These differences may have profound effects on your path to instant fortune.? In cooler weather, you are able to weigh your options and choose the best one, no matter how cognitively complex the decision may be; in warmer weather, however, you?re more likely to take the easiest available route?in this case, the pick-6 lotto (which, in Florida, has an approximately 1 in 22,957,480 chance of winning the jackpot).

Although the idea that our decisions are swayed by the temperature of our surroundings may seem far-fetched, consider one simple fact: our brains are organs. And, just like all other organs, these decision-making centers need energy to function. Almost everything we do?whether it is a physical behavior or a mental process?uses the same energy source: glucose. We use glucose as we walk, talk, breathe, and perform other physical functions in our daily lives. We also use glucose when we perform effortful mental functions, such as making decisions, exerting self-control, suppressing emotional responses, and even answering math problems. ?Crucially, glucose?this fundamental source of both physical and mental energy?is a limited resource.

One of the body?s most important tasks is temperature regulation. When the ambient temperature is unusually hot (Florida) or unusually cold (Alaska), we must use energy?in the form of glucose?to maintain a healthy internal temperature; we shiver and sweat, seeking to avoid hypothermia and heat stroke. These two processes?correcting for excessive heat and unwanted cold?are not equally taxing, however; cooling the body down seems to require more energy than warming it up.

Warm temperatures, then, are more likely to deplete our resources?as our bodies work to maintain homeostasis, we use up large amounts of glucose. Because glucose is also used for mental processes, it may be that the physical demands imposed by excessive warmth reduce our capacity for cognitive functioning, thereby adversely affecting our decision-making abilities.

GALVESTON, Texas ? An engine fire on the cruise ship Carnival Triumph has caused the vessel to operate on emergency generator power, stranding it approximately 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

There are 3,143 guests and 1,086 crew members on board the four-day cruise that departed Galveston on Thursday. The fire occurred over the weekend, and now there are plans to tow the ship to Mobile, Alabama.

Carnival had originally planned to tow the boat to Progreso, Mexico where passengers would take a flight back to the U.S., but Monday evening, the boat drifted 90 miles north and there was a change in plans.

Because the ship drifted, it is nearly equidistant to Mobile. Carnival says given the strength of the currents, the ship will head north, rather than attempt to tow against them.

The ship is expected to arrive in Mobile sometime on Thursday, which is roughly the same time it would have arrived in Mexico.

Once the ship arrives, Carnival will provide the necessary transportation to get the guests home. Officials say Mobile also provides simpler re-entry to the U.S. because about 900 guests onboard are traveling without passports.

Toby Barlow?s wife, Anne, is on the cruise ship and he has been able to communicate with her by phone and text message.

?Basically she says, 'we are alright just scared,' ? Barlow told KHOU 11 News.??There is no power at all on the boat and no water.?

Barlow?s wife said passengers are being told a tug boat will arrive Monday to begin the process of towing the boat to port.

Officials confirmed a tugboat is en route to the ship?s location and will tow the vessel to Progreso, Mexico, which is the closest port to the ship?s current location. This will allow guests to disembark and get them home as quickly as possible. The ship is expected to arrive in Progreso on Wednesday afternoon.

Carnival said an automatic fire extinguishing system activated and the fire was contained to the aft engine room. There were no casualties or injuries to guests or crew.

All guests have been asked to remain in the ship?s public areas and open decks.

Another ship, the Carnival Elation, was on-scene and transferring additional food and beverage provisions to the Carnival Triumph, officials said.

Carnival said all guests on the current voyage will receive a full refund inclusive of gratuities and any transportation expenses.

The company said it is in the process of contacting the designated emergency contacts for all guests on board. Concerned family and loved ones of guests and crew may call 1-888-290-5095 or 1-305-406-5534.

Carnival has contacted guests booked on the next voyage, which was scheduled to depart Monday. Those guests have the option of cancelling now and receiving a full refund or waiting for further information to determine if a shortened, partial voyage may be possible.

Details on Initial Incident/Status of Tugboats

Yesterday morning, February 10, the cruise ship Carnival Triumph experienced a fire in the aft engine room while the vessel was sailing approximately 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.?? The ship?s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was successfully extinguished.? There were no casualties or injuries to guests or crew.?

The vessel is currently without propulsion in the Gulf of Mexico and awaiting the arrival of two tugboats which will tow the ship to Progreso, Mexico, which is the closest port to the ship?s current location.? The ship is expected to arrive in Progreso late Wednesday and guests will be flown from Mexico back to the U.S. on chartered aircraft which the company is currently working to arrange.

Currently, a team consisting of additional technical crew and guest service personnel is en route to the vessel and is expected to arrive via boat later today.? All appropriate authorities including U.S. Coast Guard have been notified and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter is presently on site next to the Carnival Triumph and in communication with the ship.

Update on Shipboard Services

The ship has maintained emergency generator power since the fire occurred and the technical team on board has been successful in gradually restoring auxiliary power to operate some basic hotel functions.? Currently, public and cabin toilets are operational in certain sections of the ship, power has been restored to a limited number of elevators, and some power in the Lido dining area is providing for hot coffee and limited hot food service.? Guests have been supplied with food and refreshments throughout yesterday and this morning and the ship has supplies on board to last until the vessel returns to port.?

Yesterday afternoon, the Carnival Elation rendezvoused with the Carnival Triumph and supplied dinners for the guests on Carnival Triumph, along with additional provisions.? Early this afternoon, the Carnival Legend will also be on site to do the same.??

Upcoming Voyages and Compensation

All guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund of the cruise, along with transportation expenses.? In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

The next two voyages of Carnival Triumph, scheduled to depart Monday, February 11 and Saturday, February 16 are being cancelled.? Guests scheduled to sail on either of those voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable travel expenses and a 25 percent discount on a future three to five-day cruise. Carnival is in contact with impacted guests to advise them of the situation.

The current Carnival Triumph voyage departed Galveston, Texas, on Thursday, February 7 and was scheduled to return on Monday, Feb. 11.
