NEW ? 1:45 p.m. March 21, 2012

Regional Animal Services of King County is joining the nonprofit Missing Pet Partnership to help pet owners search for lost animals.

Through the program, Mission Reunite: Help and Hope for Lost Pets, Regional Animal Services volunteers can receive training from the Missing Pet Partnership to offer hands-on assistance to people searching for a lost cat or dog. Volunteers can also learn to find the owners of lost pets already at the shelter.

The training session is 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the King County Pet Adoption Center,?21615 64th Ave. S., Kent.

?When a pet goes missing, it can be very upsetting,? said Sarah Luthens, manager of volunteer programs for Regional Animal Services of King County. ?Nationally, only 16 percent of lost dogs, and just 2 percent of lost cats, are ever reunited with their owners. The Mission Reunite program is a highly innovative, volunteer-based program that can improve those odds and reconnect lost pets with their families.?

People interested in the program should RSVP to sarah.luthens@kingcounty.gov or call 206-296-3946.

Missing Pet Partnership founder Kat Albrecht has been involved in finding missing pets since 1997, and founded the organization in 2001.

?While Mission Reunite can help reconnect lost pets with their owners, it?s also important for people to license and microchip their dog or cat,? Luthens said. ?A pet that is licensed and microchipped has a much better chance of being reunited with its owner.?

We Need to Stop Marketing 'Social Business' If We Want to Start ...

social business, blueprint

You ever get the feeling you need to just drop a topic? ?I am completely there when it comes to ??Social Business?. ?Even to the point that I?m pretty sure I?ve started pissing off friends and people I respect in this space.

To set the record straight, I like what I think is the generally accepted definition of a ?Social Business?. ?Most all definitions seem to be build around the need for an increased flow of information. ?External information from the customer being utilized and distributed internally so smarter business decisions can be made, and more communication from the company back to the customer. ?I am a HUGE believer in the benefits that businesses will gain as a result, and I?ve been blogging about these concepts here for a while now.

But the majority of the discussion around the concept of a ?Social Business? has frustrated me for a while now, and I couldn?t quite place my finger on why exactly. ?Then it hit me: This doesn?t feel like a discussion, it feels like marketing. ?Almost every time I read a post/article about Social Business, I feel like I am reading a brochure at a car dealership.

A far more interesting discussion in my mind is to talk about exactly how a business would transition to becoming a ?social business?. ?Let?s talk about the specifics:

What happens internally? ?Do we need to hire new people for newly-created positions? ?If so, which ones, and what would their roles be? ?How will we better connect with our customers? ?Do we need to create a new infrastructure to better facilitate the flow of information internally about our customers? ?And what information do we need to distribute and which departments need to get what? ?Then how do we create a way to get information back to our customers? ?Do we create an internal and external committee to facilitate that information flow in both directions? ?How many people do we need to staff for that?

Those are the type of discussions I want to see, because I think we need more blueprints and fewer brochures if we want to speed business adoption of this process. ?And granted, there?s obviously no ?one size fits all? solution, but we should at least have plenty of scenarios in place where we can determine more definite numbers based on a given business reality.

I think at this point the discussion is still a bit vague around Social Business because we are ?selling? a concept that?s not often seen ?in the wild?. ?But I think if we want to speed adoption of the concept, we need to move the discussion away from wordy definitions and more toward actual business realities. ?Even if it means we need to at some point add ?I think? to our explanations cause we don?t have real-world examples of what our ideas being executed would look like.

And to be fair, we are seeing bits and pieces of what the larger picture could look like. ?A community ideation site here, an internal socnet for employees there, a brand ambassador program in the corner, but we really don?t seem to have a view of what the whole picture could look like for an organization.

We need that. ?Or at the very least we need a discussion around what it looks like. ?And if we aren?t sure what it looks like, then we definitely need to have that discussion.

One of the things I loved about the blogosphere when I first joined it in 2005 was that many of us adopted a habit of asking ?what if?? when it came to our discussions about how companies could utilize and benefit from social media. ?We threw stuff against the wall, some of it stuck, some of it didn?t. ?But we all learned in the process. ?We helped each other flesh out the concepts of how businesses could utilize social media, and even some of the concepts that have now been rolled into the idea of what a ?Social Business? is.

But I think we skipped the ?what if?? stage with Social Business. ?It?s like we adopted our own definitions for what the concept is, then immediately started trying to sell it to companies. ?Literally.

If we want to speed up understanding and adoption of the concept of a Social Business, I think we need to back up a bit and stop selling the concept, and start debating it more. ?We need to stop saying ?here?s what it is?, and instead say ?here?s what I *think* it could look like?.

And to clear the air: ?I keep railing about this topic because I believe in the concept of a ?Social Business?. ?Granted, I?m not crazy about the label, but I like the thinking. ?If I didn?t, if I thought this was all bullshit soaked in snake oil, I wouldn?t waste my time.

I think we need to elevate the conversation and dialogue around the concept. ?And I think in this case, we can start by offering fewer definitions for what a Social Business is, and instead more discussion of how we recognize one when we see one. ?Fewer buzzwords, and more questions.

Understanding speeds adoption, and understanding comes from asking questions you don?t know the answers to. ?I don?t know what the exact framework for a Social Business is. ?I know what the definitions say it is at 30,000 feet, but I want to know what it looks like on the ground, in practice. ?So do the companies that are being sold the concept.

What do you think a Social Business would look like? ?If your company was going to start today on the road to becoming a Social Business, what changes would need to happen?

Chicago Bears Take Out Matt Forte Insurance Pol...I Mean, Sign ...

Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush (29) against the Detroit Lions. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma)

Last year, the Chicago Bears signed Marion Barber as a backup for Matt Forte. Save for an embarrassing fumble against the Denver Broncos, he performed pretty well in that job. So...the Bears just signed another good backup for Matt Forte? Now-former Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush is now a Bear.

Adam Schefter reports that the deal is for $14 million and $7 million guaranteed. The Bears are now paying a lot of money to running backs; Forte was slapped with the franchise tag. A necessary question: Is Bush a good backup that fits a new offense that is going to rotate running backs more often, or is this insurance against Forte not fully recovering from his knee injury or wanting to sign a long-term deal?

This is an interesting deal for a team that doesn't have a lot of cap room and that already has talent at the running back position. If the Bears want to make any moves after this one, they're going to have to restructure some of their highly-paid veterans.

What music do pets prefer? - Holy Kaw!

Leaving on classical music or soothing music for your pets might not be best for them.

Against the conventional wisdom that music is a uniquely human phenomenon, ongoing research shows that animals actually do have the capacity for music. But rather than liking classical or rock, Snowdon, an animal psychologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has discovered that animals march to the beat of a different drum altogether.

Weill Cornell scientists say the program might help patients manage their disease

NEW YORK (March 21, 2012) -- Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College have developed a computer program that has tracked the manner in which different forms of dementia spread within a human brain. They say their mathematic model can be used to predict where and approximately when an individual patient's brain will suffer from the spread, neuron to neuron, of "prion-like" toxic proteins -- a process they say underlies all forms of dementia.

Their findings, published in the March 22 issue of Neuron, could help patients and their families confirm a diagnosis of dementia and prepare in advance for future cognitive declines over time. In the future -- in an era where targeted drugs against dementia exist -- the program might also help physicians identify suitable brain targets for therapeutic intervention, says the study's lead researcher, Ashish Raj, Ph.D., an assistant professor of computer science in radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College.

"Think of it as a weather radar system, which shows you a video of weather patterns in your area over the next 48 hours," says Dr. Raj. "Our model, when applied to the baseline magnetic resonance imaging scan of an individual brain, can similarly produce a future map of degeneration in that person over the next few years or decades.

"This could allow neurologists to predict what the patient's neuroanatomic and associated cognitive state will be at any given point in the future. They could tell whether and when the patient will develop speech impediments, memory loss, behavioral peculiarities, and so on," he says. "Knowledge of what the future holds will allow patients to make informed choices regarding their lifestyle and therapeutic interventions.

"At some point we will gain the ability to target and improve the health of specific brain regions and nerve fiber tracts," Dr. Raj says. "At that point, a good prediction of a subject's future anatomic state can help identify promising target regions for this intervention. Early detection will be key to preventing and managing dementia."

Tracking the Flow of Proteins

The computational model, which Dr. Raj developed, is the latest, and one of the most significant, validations of the idea that dementia is caused by proteins that spread through the brain along networks of neurons. It extends findings that were widely reported in February that Alzheimer's disease starts in a particular brain region, but spreads further via misfolded, toxic "tau" proteins. Those studies, by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital, were conducted in mouse models and focused only on Alzheimer's disease.

In this study, Dr. Raj details how he developed the mathematical model of the flow of toxic proteins, and then demonstrates that it correctly predicted the patterns of degeneration that results in a number of different forms of dementia.

He says his model is predicated on the recent understanding that all known forms of dementia are accompanied by, and likely caused by, abnormal or "misfolded" proteins. Proteins have a defined shape, depending on their specific function -- but proteins that become misshapen can produce unwanted toxic effects. One example is tau, which is found in a misfolded state in the brains of both Alzheimer's patients and patients with frontal temporal dementia (FTD). Other proteins, such as TDP43 and ubiquitin, are also found in FTD, and alpha synuclein is found in Parkinson's disease.

These proteins are called "prion-like" because misfolded, or diseased, proteins induce the misfolding of other proteins they touch down a specific neuronal pathway. Prion diseases (such as mad cow disease) that involve transmission of misfolded proteins are thought to be infectious between people. "There is no evidence that Alzheimer's or other dementias are contagious in that way, which is why their transmission is called prion-like."

Simple Explanation for Clinically Observed Patterns of Dementia

Dr. Raj calls his model of trans-neuronal spread of misfolded proteins "very simple." It models the same process by which any gas diffuses in air, except that in the case of dementias the diffusion process occurs along connected neural fiber tracts in the brain.

"This is a common process by which any disease-causing protein can result in a variety of dementias," he says.

The model identifies the neural sub-networks in the brain into which misfolded proteins will collect before moving on to other brain areas that are connected by networks of neurons. In the process the proteins alter normal functioning of all brain areas they visit.

"What is new and really quite remarkable is the network diffusion model itself, which acts on the normal brain connectivity network and manages to reproduce many known aspects of whole brain disease patterns in dementias," Dr. Raj says. "This provides a very simple explanation for why different dementias appear to target specific areas of the brain."

In the study, he was able to match patterns from the diffusion model, which traced protein disbursal in a healthy brain, to the patterns of brain atrophy observed in patients with either Alzheimer's disease or FTD. This degeneration was measured using MRI and other tools that could quantify the amount of brain volume loss experienced in each region of the patient's brain. Co-author Amy Kuceyeski, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow who works with Dr. Raj, helped analyze brain volume measurements in the diseased brains.

"Our study demonstrates that such a spreading mechanism leads directly to the observed patterns of atrophy one sees in various dementias," Dr. Raj says. "While the classic patterns of dementia are well known, this is the first model to relate brain network properties to the patterns and explain them in a deterministic and predictive manner."

Fresh from Illinois defeat, Santorum looks south

Louisiana's primary is on Saturday, and Santorum is hopeful for a strong showing there.

Dealt a resounding defeat in Illinois' presidential primary, Republican Rick Santorum brushed off the latest loss to rival Mitt Romney and told his supporters on Tuesday to "saddle up like Reagan did in the cowboy movies" and help him narrow a seemingly insurmountable deficit in delegates.

Santorum had hoped to make a real contest of Illinois, the birthplace of actor turned president Ronald Reagan, but he was outspent in advertising by a 7-to-1 margin by Romney and his allies and fled the state before balloting began.

"We're heading to Louisiana for the rest of the week, then we're back here in Pennsylvania and we're going to pick up a whole boatload of delegates and close this gap and then on to victory," he told a packed hotel ballroom in Gettysburg, Pa., as more than 1,000 supporters waited outside.

RECOMMENDED:?Santorum's culture war moments?

Santorum won the Southern states of Alabama and Mississippi last week. Romney has not posted a win in the South since his January triumph in Florida.

"We're feeling very, very good about winning Louisiana on Saturday," Santorum said to cheers.

A 10-day break follows Louisiana before Washington, D.C., Maryland and Wisconsin have primaries on April 3. Santorum is not on the ballot in the nation's capital, the latest example of his campaign's struggle to organize.

But Santorum has shown new signs of political life. Aides said the campaign raised more than $9 million in February and has more than $2.6 million on hand for a Republican primary that shows no sign of ending soon.

Santorum campaign sought to downplay the Illinois results, instead looking at adding delegates from rural areas to Santorum's column in any sum.

"People are getting too focused on winning states. That's not the contest anymore. The contest is winning your share of stuff," longtime Santorum adviser John Brabender told reporters.

Nissan not planning Datsun for developed markets

YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) ? Nissan's revival of the Datsun won't include developed markets, Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said Wednesday, outlining a strategy to target the revamped brand at emerging nations where the biggest growth is expected for affordable stylish vehicles.

The offerings will be tailored for each market, including price and engine size, targeting the burgeoning market of first-time car buyers in countries such as India, Indonesia and Russia, where Datsun will be introduced from 2014, he said.

Executives gave away few details, including specifics of Datsun models they had in the works.

Corporate Vice President Vincent Cobee said the new Datsuns will be entry-level cars in each nation, aimed at "up and coming" successful people who are "optimistic about the future."

He said two models will go on sale within the first year in the three nations, and an enhanced lineup of models will be offered within three years.

Nissan Motor Co. faces intense competition from rivals, including other Japanese players such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co., which all have their eyes on emerging markets that also include China, Mexico and Brazil. Growth has stagnated in recent years in more established markets such as Japan, the U.S. and Europe.

Ghosn announced Tuesday in Indonesia that the Datsun will make a comeback, three decades after the shelving of a brand that helped define not only Nissan but Japanese carmaking in the U.S., as well as in Japan. It is a name that is synonymous with affordable and reliable small cars, according to Nissan.

Datsun debuted in Japan in 1932, and hit American showrooms more than 50 years ago.

It was discontinued globally starting in 1981 to unify the model lineup under the Nissan brand. Nissan also makes Infiniti luxury models.

Tsuyoshi Mochimaru, auto analyst with Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, said the Datsun name helps differentiate cheaper models targeting emerging markets from Nissan's other models.

"Emerging markets are where the growth is, but what will sell are cheaper cars, where profit margins will be lower," he said. "By separating the brand, you avoid hurting the value of the Nissan brand."

The new blue Datsun logo was inspired by the old one, according to Nissan.

Ghosn said Nissan has been preparing the Datsun brand for years and was already developing models. He was confident Nissan had not fallen behind rivals.

"We just see an opportunity," he told reporters. "When you're ready, you should do it."

Nissan officials acknowledged only the older generation may be familiar with the Datsun brand and it may not even be recognized in emerging markets.

But they said it stood for good styling, durability and safety.

"Datsun is part of the heritage of the company," Ghosn said. "Datsun is a good name."

Guidelines When Dealing With Forex Trade

Trading on Forex

The Forex market is what broke many of these traders.

If you?re looking for a market that far exceeds the others available, you?re looking for the Forex. Because the vast nature of the Forex, there is a great margin for gaining profits. However, the large room for profits also means large room for losses. As in any market, this is a business, not just a hobby. While there is a certain glamorous image that is attached to trading, it is really nothing more than a series of decisions. Because this enterprise is still a business, it requires a plan that manages knowledge and time. While currency trading on the Forex may offer more opportunities to make more money than other business ventures, it is more risky that most. This risk means it is even more important to educate yourself before undertaking this challenge.

Only a fool would attempt trading on the Forex before learning how. Finding the avenues to learn Forex trading is not difficult. Online, an interested investor can easily find volumes of free educational material about the Forex. If you?re interested in truly learning the right way, trading schools offer courses focusing on Forex. A formal education is a real necessity before beginning Forex trading. Extremely volatile market conditions and daily evolution of trading methods are a few reasons education is imperative.

Speculator is the real label for currency traders. Because of the risk involved, currency trading is more like gambling than investing. Just as other markets have provided great opportunities for new traders in the past, the currency market is open and viable. Knowledge of the actual movement of currency is vital to beginning a business like this. Even though there are very few roadblocks to starting a currency trading venture, it is important to observe those that are in place.

Successful Forex trading requires practice. This is an absolute necessity to be successful. Theoretical knowledge alone is great, but a practice account allows you to test your ability to be successful in a real market. A new currency trader can be sure of only one thing should they rush into Forex: failure. It has been proven that well over half of new traders fail. Forex trading is not a route to overnight riches; it is like anything else and requires time, effort, and money to make a profit. Some years back, a contingent of motivated young men left behind bosses and the daily grind of working for someone else to pursue day trading on the financial markets from home. Because they didn?t have the patience or the knowledge, many of these traders failed. More often than not, these failed traders blame their losses on everything and anything but themselves.

World record bridal train displayed in Romania

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? A hot air balloon floated over downtown Bucharest on Tuesday carrying a model wearing what is now regarded as the world's longest bridal train.

The 1.85-mile-long (nearly 3-kilometer) ivory train on the model's wedding gown billowed out over a main boulevard in Romania's capital.

The Guinness Book of World Records on Monday recognized the item on the silk and lace gown as the longest train, beating the previous record held by a Dutch designer.

But pedestrians didn't seem to make much of Tuesday's media event, which was organized by the artifact's creators: the Andree Salon fashion house and the organizers of this year's biannual Wedding Fair in Bucharest.

A few bystanders looked up at the balloon, but many others ignored it.

The train, which took 100 days to create, was crafted by a team of 10 seamstresses, said salon spokeswoman Lavinia Lascae. The lace was imported from France, while taffeta and other fabrics were purchased from Italy, costing a total of 24,000 lei ($7,364.48 or ?5,580), she added.

Beating a Dutch designer to the record had an added dimension for Romanians, as many are still angry after the Netherlands opposed its entry into the European Union's visa-free travel zone. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte recently demanded that Romania and Bulgaria do more to reform their justice systems and combat corruption and organized crime before he would support integration.

"If the Netherlands does not allow us into Europe, we'll take them out of the world records book," said Alin Caraman, an organizer of the Wedding Fair.

Study Suggests Omega-3 May Help Prevent Obesity-Related Health ...

According to data from the National Health and Examination Survey, 34% of the U.S. adult population and approximately 17% of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years, are obese.? Defined as weight that exceeds the average weight for height and body type by 20%, the long-term health implications of obesity are well known.? In addition to a decreased life expectancy, overweight and obese individuals are at risk to a number of health conditions including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoarthritis, respiratory problems such as sleep apnea, and depression.?

Omega-3 is an essential unsaturated fatty acid that can be found in fish oils and some plant oils, such as flax seed and algal oil.? The benefits of omega-3s have been studied in great depth since the late 1970s, when scientists learned that the native Inuits in Greenland, whose diet was very high in omega-3 fatty acids, had surprisingly low rates of heart attacks.? Today, the collection of studies conducted in an attempt to understand the benefits of these fatty acids extends to over 4,500 independent studies.

In a recent study by scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, findings suggested that the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) might help to reduce the risk of obesity-related health conditions.? The cross-sectional study involved 330 Yup'ik Eskimos with an average age of 45, of which 70% were overweight or obese.? In measuring red blood cell fatty acids, scientists found increased levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and triglycerides, which indicate infection and long-term diseases, in obese Eskimos with low omega-3 blood levels.? On the other hand, such increased levels of CRP and triglycerides were not observed in those with high blood levels of EPA and DHA fatty acids.? The researchers commented, "Our findings may have important clinical relevance for the prevention of some obesity-related diseases."

Omega-3 fatty acids are naturally found in fish and some plants, but can also be taken as a supplement in oil or pill form.? These supplements are easy to get a hold of, and can really make positive difference in your overall health.? Barlean's Organic Oils has been producing quality unrefined organic oils and oil blends for decades.? As one of the freshest on the market, Barlean's Flaxseed Oil is 100% Organic, unrefined, and cold-pressed, creating the best-tasting unfiltered flax oil available.? Their Fresh Catch Fish Oil has achieved IFOS' (International Fish Oil Standards) highest 5-star rating for highest purity, safety, cleanliness, concentration, and stability.

Using only the finest natural ingredients, Barlean's Organic Oils offers an exceptional line of products to provide adults and children with the omega-3 fatty acids needed for optimal health.? Incorporating essential fatty acids, such as fish oil and flax seed oil, into your diet is a simple and effective way to help maintain your health.
