Irish lead NCAA pack in Academic Progress Reports

Notre Dame had 17 teams earn NCAA awards for Academic Progress Report results while Northwestern football, Northern Illinois football and DePaul women's basketball were other local high-profile teams to earn the same honor.

The awards are given each year to teams with APRs in the top 10 percent in their respective sports, with full APR results arriving next week.

Notre Dame's 17 teams did not include football or women's basketball, two of its most notable programs, but higher-profile programs in men's basketball, women's soccer, men's ice hockey and men's lacrosse did merit the honor. Among Football Bowl Subdivision institutions, Notre Dame ranked first with its 17 teams.

Notre Dame's women's soccer team was one of five national champions from the 2010-11 season included in this year's award list.

Northwestern had 10 teams recognized, including its football team, which was one of just 12 Football Bowl Subdivision teams to earn that honor along with Northern Illinois, Boise State, Clemson, Duke, Middle Tennessee State, Rice, Rutgers, Ohio State, Air Force, Miami and Vanderbilt.

Other Northwestern teams earning the honors were men's golf, men's soccer, men's tennis, wrestling, softball, women's cross country, women's golf, women's swimming and women's volleyball.

DePaul had seven teams honored: men's golf, men's soccer, softball, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's soccer and women's tennis. Illinois had five teams honored: baseball, men's cross country, women's golf, women's gymnastics and women's soccer.

Other than football, NIU's women's outdoor track team was the school's only other recipient.

Five Loyola athletic programs were honored: men's cross country, men's golf, men's indoor and outdoor track, and women's basketball. In the Horizon League, only Butler (11) and Valparaiso (six) received more.
